| Inhalt | This course will describe the major soils in the tropical regions. Production systems in contrasting agroecoregions will be outlined, and socioeconomic and biophysical constraints described, including importance of future challenges (increased human population; reduced water, energy, nutrient supplies; climate change). Biological, physical and chemical soil fertility will be defined and methods to assess them demonstrated. Factors impacting soil fertility and causes of soil degradation will be explained. Different interventions that impact soil fertility (fallow use, agroforestry, herbaceous cover crops, mineral fertilizer and herbicide use, tillage systems, mulching) will be contrasted. Soil management systems used by smallholder farmers e.g. shifting cultivation, and farmers’ use of ethnobotanical and ethnopedological indicators, mainly from sub-Saharan Africa, will be described. Concepts such as agricultural intensification, land sharing versus land sparing, resilience, sustainability, biodiversity / production trade-offs, climate change adaptation and mitigation methods, will be debated.
