| Inhalt | We will look at the stages of acquiring inflectional morphology and syntactic construction in English as a first language with a focus on the following questions: a) how does language development proceed; (b) what is the information in the input like; (c) how can we explain these courses of development with current learning theories. |
| Lernziele | In general, the way in which children learn a language is driven by functional needs (what children want to express) and the ease with which the relevant words and structures are available in the input. We will learn how children take up meaningful patterns or constructions, and generalize over them to form new constructions. Thus, this course will provide insights on language use in child directed speech (input), and the abilities children use to sort out the information in the input. We will also do exercises to analyze the degree of children’s productivity at various stages of development. |

| Teilnahmebedingungen | This seminar is for BA and MA students in English and the MA Language and Communication. BA students need to have reached the advanced level: for BA05 students those who have completed their proseminar paper in linguistics; for BA13 students those who have completed ALL three introductory modules (including the proseminar papers). The number of participants is restricted to 20. |
