46880-01 - Kurs: Language Ideology: how language discourse functions to construct meanings 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2017
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This course is designed to raise a number of questions about the links between language and ideology. A key question of this course is how language shapes social practices, and what the subsequent discursive effects of social practices are. To this end, there are three approaches that we will take to critical discourse analysis: the Lancaster school of critical discourse, and the work of Norman Fairclough will be central in considering how language is a mechanism through which power relations are expressed, and how power is instilled in language. Further, classic Marxist discourse following Stuart Hall’s position will inform the course; finally a Foucauldian approach to discourse will also be considered. In terms of material, we will be exploring mass discourse phenomena, such as advertising, marketing, and political or media discourse. The other aspect of the course is to think and practise how to address the field, engage in debate, and express your argument clearly.
Lernziele Students will learn about key terms in critical discourse analysis; will develop critical approaches to mass-media discourse; will practise engaging in the field and expressing a clear argument in the debate on media.
Literatur A list of texts will be provided at the beginning of the course.
