46894-01 - Forschungsseminar: Travel Writing 4 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2017
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Ina Habermann (ina.habermann@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt In this seminar, which is offered in collaboration with the University of Freiburg/Br. (Prof. Barbara Korte), we will study the development of British travel writing with a special focus on the changing uses and deployment of media. In terms of content, we will start out by reading classics of travel writing about the Continent of Europe - a choice that was made mindful of the topical significance of British discourses of Europe after the Brexit vote. The emphasis will then shift from classics to changes in the practice of travel writing in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, widening the scope of the genre and including other media (documentary, blog etc.). Students will be able to select their own topic, to research it independently, and to present it at a student conference organised together with our colleagues from Freiburg. Please note that attendance at the conference, scheduled for June 2 and 3, is part of the course requirements!
Lernziele Students will broaden their knowledge in travel writing and improve their skill in critical analysis as well as their understanding of the role of literature and other media in cultural discourses. Seminar discussions will provide the basis and frame for independent research.
Literatur (to be purchased; discussed in this order):
- Jan Morris, "Europe: An Intimate Journey" (1997/2006)
- Patrick Leigh Fermor, "A Time of Gifts" (1977)
- Nick Hunt, "Walking the Woods and the Water: Walking in Patrick Leigh Fermor’s Footsteps from the Hook of Holland to the Golden Horn" (2014)

Further material will be made available on the ADAM server.
