| Inhalt | In an article in "The Guardian", the British drama critic Michael Billington asked: "Is there something peculiarly British in this use of drama as a form of national inquiry? On the whole, I think there is. (...) I believe British theatre’s resilience lies in its unstoppable urge to take the moral temperature of the nation and to hold our leaders to account. You only have to look at the Iraq war, which quickly produced a formidable body of work (...) Significantly, it was theatre, rather than our timorous TV networks or the arthritic medium of cinema, that articulated public disquiet about Blair's policy of 'humane intervention'." In this course, we will examine how contemporary British playwrights have responded to key national and international events - ranging from Jez Butterworth's acclaimed epic exploration of 'old England' "Jerusalem" (2009) to Lucy Kirkwood's geopolitical thriller "Chimerica" (2013) about the protests in Tiananmen Square - and we will discuss dramatic representations of globalisation, social change, regional and ethnic identities and turbo-capitalism as well as a variety of theatrical forms, including verbatim theatre, political satire and the morality play. |

| Teilnahmebedingungen | This seminar is for BA students on the advanced level: for BA05 students those who have completed their proseminar paper in Literary & Cultural Studies; for BA13 students those who have completed ALL three introductory modules (including the proseminar papers). |
