| Inhalt | The transnational movements of patients and health care workers have fundamentally changed the role and value of language and communication in healthcare. Using the healthcare industry as its focus, this seminar examines the language and communication practices that have become an essential part of the work of healthcare workers, as the demands of globally mobile patients are managed and the needs of ever more diverse patients are accommodated. It also looks at the conditions within which particular configurations of language are valued and how the linguistic resources of healthcare workers are managed, serving both as gatekeepers of labor as well as instrumental tools necessary in the care of diverse patients. |
| Lernziele | Students will: 1. Engage with conceptual frameworks for understanding language work in healthcare 2. Be introduced to qualitative and especially, ethnographically-based approaches in the study of language in the workplace |
