| Inhalt | What would a society look like without literacy? When was writing "invented", by whom, how, and why? What possible linguistic relationships between the spoken and the written word are there? What advantages and disadvantages do different writing systems offer? What are the different stages of the history of writing English? And why is today’s English orthography so inconsistent? How do you spell non-standard varieties of English? Why do spelling reforms cause such emotional outcries? And how do beginners (children or adults) learn how to read and write? These and many other topics on reading and writing will be explored from a linguistic perspective. Key issues are the psychodynamics of literacy and orality, the history of writing (with special focus on English), the development and system of English orthography, reading and writing in its social and institutional context, adult illiteracy, approaches to initial literacy, and dyslexia. |
| Lernziele | 1. Become familiar with the role of writing in language as seen from the sociolinguistic, applied linguistic, anthropological, historical and psycholinguistic perspectives. 2. Gain an understanding of the effects of literacy, and orality, on English in its different stages of development, from Old English to the internet age. |
