46884-01 - Seminar: 20th Century British Drama 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2017
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Monika Fludernik (monika.fludernik@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This seminar will provide an overview of twentieth-century British drama, featuring some authors who wrote before the second world war (Shaw, Maugham, Galsworthy) and some important dramatists from the period after the 1950s. There is an emphasis on comedy, but not exclusively so. The current selection features problem plays, postcolonial issues, gender questions, the law, and war as well as discussions of art. It excludes absurd drama (Beckett, Pinter), kitchen sink drama (Osborne, Wesker), political drama (Bond, Barker, Brenton), feminist drama (Churchill) and in-yer-face-theatre (Mark Ravenhill, Sarah Kane, Jez Butterworth, Martin Crimp, Martin McDonagh). However, these movements will be discussed by way of oral reports so that a survey of all types of British drama in the twentieth century will be provided. Registered participants will receive an updated schedule in the second week of February by email attachment.
Lernziele Students will cultivate an understanding and an overview of the developments of British drama in the 20th century. They will also learn to exercise drama-specific theoretical concepts and aspects of performance practice.
