46620-01 - Übung: Staging History: Visuality, Museums and Heritage in Namibia 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2017
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Giorgio Miescher (giorgio.miescher@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt How can complex historical narratives and experiences be represented to diverse audiences? How can diverse audiences get interested in history and in what kind of history? If we want to speak to diverse audiences about history, how do we balance texts, images and other media in order to make history accessible and understandable? These are some of the questions museum curators are confronted with on a daily base. Modern museums are institutions of collecting and displaying. In the Western world museums played an important role in the production and dissemination of knowledge and were integral parts in the creation of Western social and cultural identities. Despite various challenges, e.g. with regard to exhibition contents, forms of display, and funding, museums in the Western world successfully maintained a privileged position in the public sphere. Museums in the former colonial world have a different history. While they today share similar challenges in addressing their respective audiences, the ways in which they think about their role in and commitment to contemporary society is determined by the specific resonances of colonialism in the present.
In the seminar (Uebung) we engage in theories and practices of museums with a special focus on Namibia and occasional comparisons with other former colonial societies. We will discuss the specific museum landscape in Namibia, its past and prospects. We will try to understand the specific challenges museums in Namibia are confronted with, and look at their various possibilities. Namibia has both established and emerging museums. The former being products of the colonial settler society, whereas the latter comprise institutions celebrating the liberation struggle and the new leaders’ glorious past, as well as some more community based local museums. Both types of museums have their specific challenges and have to deal with particular questions, such as how to transform a colonial museum in order to make it speak to the new realities in post-independence Namibia, how to present the history of the liberation struggle while being considerate of perspectives and concerns raised by witnesses of the time, how to build a museum from scratch without existing collections, etc..

Anmeldung zur Lehrveranstaltung The seminar (Uebung) builds on the two semester course Liberation and Resistance (spring semester 2016 and fall semester 2016) but is open to newcomers. The seminar also serves as a preparation for a planned excursion to Namibia (most probably in August 2017).
