Inhalt Course description
This course will give an introduction to the regional development of the Pearl River Delta – one of the most dynamic regions in China and the world during the last two decades. Four sections are included in the course:
Background of the Regional Development. In this part, the international and domestic background of economic development around the end of the 1970s will be reviewed. The intentions, progress and implications of the Open Door Policy will be introduced, and the function of the Special Economic Zones and the Pearl River Delta will be analyzed.
Industrialization – Engine of Economic Growth. The dramatic regional economic growth is the theme of this section. The contents will focus upon the industrialization models, the roles of foreign direct investment and multinational corporations, the local governments and local entrepreneurs.
Urbanization: Engine of Urban Change. Very rapid urbanization is another key characteristic of the Pearl River Delta during the last three decades. Compared with the city based urbanization in western countries, the ways and progress of urbanization in the Pearl River Delta are quite different. The regional rural urbanization model, which is very similar to Desakota advanced by Mc Gee in the late 1980s, will be introduced. Also, the newest trends of urban development and planning will be surveyed.
Regional Problems and Regional Planning. The regional problems and challenges such as environmental pollution, migration and land use will be described. Recent efforts in regional planning and infrastructure construction will be introduced.
