48341-01 - Seminar: Practices and Policies of Development 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2017
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Lucy Koechlin (lucy.koechlin@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Foreign aid and development cooperation are topics which we frequently encounter, but what do we really know about the way that it works? Can we even speak of development cooperation as if it were one thing, e.g. putting large-scale programmes of multilateral development banks in the same box as small, jointly developed projects between partners in the North and South?
This seminar aims at providing insights into the different forms of development cooperation, the mechanics of development policies, how they are designed and implemented, and the issues that arise as a result of "external" intervention and development cooperation.
In a first step we shall engage critically with literature on development cooperation, gaining a systematic overview over main types of development as well as the key critique levelled against it. In a second step development practitioners from various organisations will present their organisation and work, which will give us the opportunity to debate strengths and weaknesses of development cooperation from both an academic as well as a practitioner's perspective. Guest lecturers will include representatives from fepa (Fund for Development and Partnership in Africa), IAMANEH Switzerland, and GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit).
Lernziele - Overview over main types of foreign aid
- Understanding of types of intervention, their opportunities and challenges
