| Inhalt | How can complex historical narratives and experiences be represented to diverse audiences? How can diverse audiences get interested in history and in what kind of history? If we want to speak to diverse audiences about history, how do we balance texts, images and other media in order to make history accessible and understandable? These are some of the questions museum curators are confronted with on a daily base. Modern museums are institutions of collecting and displaying. In the Western world museums played an important role in the production and dissemination of knowledge and were integral parts in the creation of Western social and cultural identities. Despite various challenges, e.g. with regard to exhibition contents, forms of display, and funding, museums in the Western world successfully maintained a privileged position in the public sphere. Museums in the former colonial world have a different history. While they today share similar challenges in addressing their respective audiences, the ways in which they think about their role in and commitment to contemporary society is determined by the specific resonances of colonialism in the present. The international workshop brings together students from the University of Basel, the University of Namibia and young Namibian museum practitioner. It entails a theoretical and methodological part as well as an excursion to different museums and heritage sites. |
