| Inhalt | "Since as far back as fifth-century B.C. Athens, playwrights have plucked the family tree for the fruits of comedy and tragedy. From Sophocles to Shakespeare, bloodlines equal plot lines", the 'Time Out New York Magazine' writers David Cote, Adam Feldman and Helen Shaw observe. Postcolonial playwrights have contributed significantly to the internationalisation of dramatic representations of the family as a key symbol of particular norms and values. By drawing on a wide variety of plays from Asian America, Australia, Britain, India and Pakistan, in this seminar we will explore how postcolonial and diasporic playwrights and theatre practitioners address, stage and question (often tabooed) subjects such as class relations and family life, domestic violence, the diversity of family forms, the ideology of family, intergenerational relations and patriarchy. |
| Lernziele | Students will be introduced to a broad range of postcolonial family plays and key critical and methodological approaches to drama. |
| Literatur | Primary and theoretical texts will be made available on ADAM. |
