| Inhalt | This third-semester proseminar course focuses on creative and extraordinary depictions of temporality in British literature, ranging from fragmented perspectives and reversed causality to classic time travel narratives. In combination with theoretical texts by authors such as Paul Ricoeur, Friedrich Nietzsche, David Herman, and Mieke Bal, participants are going to explore the topic of time in fiction both from narratological and philosophical viewpoints. |
| Lernziele | Close readings of primary texts and critical assessment with theoretical concepts of literature. |
| Literatur | Please order and read H.G. Wells' novel "The Time Machine" (Penguin English Library, ISBN: 978-0-141-19934-4) for the first session. Further primary literature we are going to discuss in this proseminar: Martin Amis, "Time's Arrow" (Vintage Books, ISBN: 978-0-099-45535-6) Claire North, "The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August" (Orbit, ISBN: 978-0-356-50258-8) Connie Willis, "To Say Nothing of the Dog" (Gollancz, ISBN: 978-0-575-11312-1) Please order all editions with these given ISBNs so that we will all be on the same page when reading and discussing the books. All secondary reading material will be provided via ADAM. |
