49048-01 - Seminar: Public Policy in Europe 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2017
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Silvana Târlea (s.tarlea@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt What determines public policies in Europe? What stakeholders are involved in drafting, passing and implementing policies? What are their preferences and their constraints when engaging in the policy process? How does this differ between European countries? What role does the European Union play? The course analyses education, health, social and financial policy. The course shows how policy-making can be analysed and possibly influenced. Students learn how to be effective participants in public policymaking as analysts, administrators, or advocates. Students will gain a comparative perspective and will acquire analytical tools to analyse the political environment conducive to public policy. The course covers material from political science, economics and European integration.
Lernziele By the end of the course students will understand the political and economic environment in which the policy-making process takes place. They will recognize competing interests and alternatives that surround policy-making. Students will be able to engage in debates regarding the policy-making environment and to build their own theory-driven arguments about current debates. These will be expressed in a written essay and in a class presentation. The course will help students improve their written and oral communication skills.
