| Inhalt | The dialect landscape in the British Isles has traditionally been well documented. Atlases such as the Linguistic Atlas of England or the Survey of English Dialects provide a wealth of information (mostly of a phonological kind) on regional variation. More recently, sociolinguists have begun to investigate social variation in major cities (particularly London) in order to track social stratification and mobility-induced variation and change, the emergence of "new" varieties via dialect contact and also the formation of diagnostic ethnolects in multilingual communities. In this seminar, we will work hands-on with data from a range of sources (dialect maps, transcripts of sociolinguistic interviews) and discuss various topics. Starting with some of the classic studies (Trudgill's Norwich study, the Milroys's work in Belfast), that will provide a theoretical background, we will also look at recent research on new-dialect formation (Kerswill's work in Milton Keynes, Cheshire et al. in London). The picture will be completed with a presentation of present-day dialects throughout the British Isles and an introduction to language shift processes in Ireland and Scotland. |
