Inhalt | The highly publicized arrival of 492 West Indians on board the "Empire Windrush" at Tilbury, Essex, in June 1948 marked the beginning of large-scale migration from the Caribbean to Britain. In the words of Mike and Trevor Phillips, "the 'Windrush' sailed through a gateway in history, on the other side of which was the end of Empire and a wholesale reassessment of what it meant to be British." In this course, we will examine how Caribbean writings in English have both reflected and played a part in the transformation of British society and the emergence of new Caribbean-British identities. Covering the period from the post-war years to the turn of the millennium, we will read poetry, (Calypso and Dub) song lyrics, short stories, a novel, as well as a play by, among others, Una Marson, Lord Kitchener, Sam Selvon, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Caryl Phillips, and Pauline Melville. In addition, we will discuss the British cult film "Babylon" (1980). |
Lernziele | Participants will be introduced to a key chapter of British social history (the beginnings of multiculturalism as we know it today) via a broad range of texts by émigré writers from the Caribbean; at the same time, they will be familiarized with relevant concepts from the fields of postcolonial and cultural studies. |
Literatur | Students should acquire the following novel: Sam Selvon, "The Lonely Londoners" (Penguin Classics, 2006; ISBN: 978-0141188416). All other primary materials (short stories, song lyrics, poems, and a play) will be made available in the form of a course reader (to be purchased from the "Print-It" copy shop, Mittlere Strasse 24) as well as electronically on ADAM. |
