Inhalt | The seminar intends to develop a better understanding of discourse analysis and pragmatics and, specifically, of the role of context in meaning-making. We will examine how meaning and speech acts are situated in context, how both are influenced by context, how context is imported into discourse, and how context is entextualized in discourse. Contextual phenomena such as deixis, staging and perspectivization will be considered as means of realising the relation between discourse and context linguistically. Of particular interest is the way a recipient influences the organisation of discourse. We will answer this question by studying polyphony, heteroglossia and signalling in discourse. |
Lernziele | Students will become acquainted with the linguistic subdisciplines that can be applied to the study of context in language; students will be familiar with the key terminology and able to discuss contextual phenomena in informed critical manner; they will learn to analyse language data using discourse analytic and pragmatic approaches. |
