| Inhalt | This course examines the relationship between gender, violent conflict, and peace processes. Students will read scholarship from a variety of disciplines — including but not limited to peace studies, feminist international relations theory, and gender studies — to assess the strengths and limitations of different theoretical and methodological approaches. The course will discuss the role of women in peacebuilding, and the importance, as well the limitations, of institutionalizing normative commitments to women’s rights through “gender mainstreaming.” However, this course strongly emphasizes that bringing a gender analysis to peacebuilding does not simply mean focusing on women; it also requires analyzing, for instance: the role of masculinity in disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration; the gendered political economies of war and peacebuilding; the militarization of femininity; the gendered dynamics of conflict related humanitarian intervention; and the role of feminist activism in peacebuilding. |
| Lernziele | By the end of the course students should be able to critically reflect on and engage with feminist thinking on war, militarism, security, and peace; explain the gendered nature and effects of war and violent conflict; understand and critically engage with various theoretical and methodological approaches related to gender and peacebuilding, including the normative framework for a gender-sensitive approach to peace and security and the applications and limitations of “gender mainstreaming”; enact critical gendered analyses of contemporary peacebuilding processes; and imagine feminist strategies for effecting sustainable peace. |
