Inhalt | State-building plays a prominent role in policy dialogues on development and security. This results from the growing acknowledgement that neither sustainable human development nor security can be achieved without capable state institutions. The seminar focuses on contemporary and historical processes of state-building in Asia: what factors have shaped processes of state formation in the region? How do these processes differ from state-building in Europe and Africa? What are the main challenges of current state-building in the region? The first part of the course provides an introduction into classic works on the political history and sociology of state-building. The second part focusses on the approaches and challenges of empirically investigating patterns of state-building, reviewing mainly quantitative works on state-building processes. The third part is devoted to empirical case studies drawn from historical, colonial and post-colonial processes of state-building in Asia. Students that have attended the course will be familiar with core arguments of seminal works on state-building. They will be able to critically assess the contribution of this research to understanding current processes and challenges of state-building in Asia. |
