50183-01 - Seminar: 'Sustainable' Development: A Critical Approach 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2018
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Lucy Koechlin (lucy.koechlin@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Today, sustainability is the most important catchword of global development. Since 2015 the Sustainable Development Goals serve as framework guiding the international community's economic, social and environmental policies. The 17 goals are very comprehensive - some might argue they are too comprehensive. The achievement of the goals by 2030 (the so-called Agenda 2030) is measured by 169 targets and 232 indicators linked to the goals. The novelty of the development agenda is that it addresses both countries of the North as well as the South - in this sense they are truly global goals. In addition, they explicitly include actors from all sectors, be it governmental, business or civil society.
The aim of this seminar is to gain a deeper insight into the overarching objective of sustainable development agenda. We will focus on selected goals, and analyse what their achievement implies, whether and what kinds of new forms of collaboration arise in their pursuit, how the goals influence finance and resource flows, and where their strengths and weaknesses lie. Of particular interest is the impact on African countries.
The seminar will be based on both academic and practitioner literature, and will include own research by the participants. Following invited experts will provide insights from their own field:
Ambassador Michael Gerber, who was special envoy of the government of Switzerland in the international negotiations of the SDGs, will be speaking about the intergovernmental as well as governmental perspective of implementing and achieving the SDGs;
Eva Schmassmann, responsible for the Agenda 2030 at AllianceSud, the Swiss Alliance of Development Organisations ( a non-governmental organisation), will be sharing insights into current critical issues in the implementation of the SDGs, both nationally (in Switzerland) as well as internationally.
Thomas Streiff, Partner at BHP, is a renowned expert on business, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability. He will be shedding light on the motivations, strategies and actions of multinational companies in driving Agenda 2030.
