| Inhalt | How come Rhodes has fallen at the University of Cape Town but stands high at Oriel College in Oxford? Is the one an example of a good politics of memory, and the other not? Is a child soldier in Africa wearing a rifle produced in Europe an expression of an African or a European problem? Is this a false question? On which grounds can an LGBT association be rejected? Because it goes against public morality? Or because it is in conflict with constitutional priciples? In this seminar we will examine such selected incidents involving fundamental moral and political conundrums that span across Africa and Europe. Given today’s pluralist nature of these societies, how can the concerned issues be best addressed? Is democracy a necessary requirement to address them adequately? We will proceed by looking at concrete instances, both more and less known, that are contentious enough to make one matter clear from the beginning. Giving any answer means taking a position in what quintessentially is a zone of ambivalence. To theorize (in) this zone, one has to try to give intellectual credit to different stakeholders in the conundrum, while being vigilant about the respective moral agendas and political interests. Theoretically, the major question is, “this case, what is it a case of?”, which brings up the heuristic value of reference cases and theoretical background between and across Africa and Europe. It is from this perspective that we are interested in the ad hoc theories formed by relevant stakeholders, but we also look at practicing and developing a bottom-up political theory that is sensitive to context but not relativist. |
