| Inhalt | The anthropology of state has regained considerable interest after academics realized that globalization and transnationalism, as discussed in the 90’s, were not sounding the death knell of modern states. Sometimes discarded, sometime courted, anthropologists have always had a complicated relationship with the concept of state, simultaneously underlining its various theoretical and methodological shortcomings, while admitting it’s indisputable importance in societal processes and anthropological explanations. From within, beneath, under, at the margins, above or below are only a few topographic markers associated with the idea of “state” indicating not only it’s immanence and importance but also signalling that the state is often conceptualized in relation to something external to it, for instance, the “society”, “population”, “citizens”, the “ruling class”, etc. Moreover, the state might be feared or perceived as a beacon of hope. Some are fighting it, others protect it at all cost. Whatever the perspective, a great deal of affect, feelings and passions surround the notion of state. The anthropology of state is situated at the intersection of many interests and viewpoints. It can be questioned as a bundle of institutions, an apparatus of power, a key parameter in social change, or as an (actual or phenomenological) political, bureaucratic, legal entity, etc. For instance, questions about regime, nationalism, citizenship, economy, governance, security, etc. are firmly tied to the idea and workings of the state. |
| Lernziele | This seminar aims to provide key theoretical and conceptual tools to think on, up, with and against the state. Classical as well as contemporary texts will be discussed during the semester in order to explore some perspectives that have been devised about the state by anthropologists. |
| Literatur | A references list will be distributed at the beginning of the semester and the core texts will be online on ADAM. Various documentaries will be shown and discusses in the classroom during the semester. |
| Bemerkungen | Laptop and mobile devices can be used in class only for the purpose of the course. Other uses (messaging, emails, browsing, games, etc.) are not acceptable as they affect learning and participation in class and can distract others. |
| Teilnahmebedingungen | Grundstudium abgeschlossen. Die Teilnehmerzahl ist aus Gründen der Qualitätssicherung der Lehre auf 20 beschränkt. Die Teilnehmenden werden nach Fachrichtung, Studiengang und in der Reihenfolge ihrer Anmeldung auf die Liste gesetzt. Wer im Rahmen von Auslandaufenthalten und von Austauschprogrammen in Basel studiert wird unabhängig vom Listenplatz immer aufgenommen. |
| Anmeldung zur Lehrveranstaltung | Belegen via MoNA. Fragen können an david.bozzini@unibas.ch gerichtet werden. Lehrveranstaltungen mit beschränkter Teilnehmerzahl können ab 01.02.2018 bis 18.02.2018 über MOnA belegt werden. Die Zuteilung erfolgt durch die Dozierenden. Bis 23.02.2018 erhalten alle definitiv aufgenommenen Studierenden eine Bestätigungsmail des Dozierenden. Wer an der ersten Sitzung einer Veranstaltung dennoch unentschuldigt fehlt, wird von der Liste gestrichen. In der ersten Sitzung einer Veranstaltung oder per Mail in der Woche der ersten Sitzung erfahren Studierende auf einer Warteposition, ob sie doch teilnehmen können. |
