Inhalt | This course offers an introduction into the role of emotions and affect in politics. By and large, the primacy of rationality has neglected emotions and affect in the social sciences, although an increasing interest in emotion and affect theories are notable in recent years. This seminar will concentrate on the literature of politics and emotions and explore how the consideration of emotions enrichens our understanding of social movements, political mobilization and citizenship. A particular focus will be on citizenship and belonging, introducing thereby the concept of affective citizenship. Another focus will be the debate on the role of emotions in populism that the Trump Presidency and the rise of rightwing movements in Europe have triggered. The renewed interest in emotions and affect has also raised questions about rethinking methods in the social sciences which the seminar will also engage with. |
