| Inhalt | In this course, we will study the concept of development and the different ways in which countries and regions transition in economic, political, social, and cultural spheres. The main focus will be on emerging economies. Different thought traditions compete in how transitions and development are understood. A prominent example is the rise and fall of the Washington Consensus, which was regarded as a universal approach for development by the World Bank and the IMF in 1990s. Another example is China and its meteoric economic and social rise. Topics to be covered in this course include World Bank/IMF-type development, sustainable development (esp. the UN SDGs), the Companies Act 2013 in India, post-colonial critique of development, “development”/development in Africa, and contemporary thoughts on development in Western Europe. In this course, we will cover key readings in the academic literature that are based on theories of the sociology of development and apply these theories to different regions and countries. |
