Inhalt | The sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube these days have a striking impact on interpersonal communication and language change. What’s more, they are rich sources of linguistic data that allow a researcher to collect corpora of natural everyday communication without the problem of Observer’s Paradox. In this class, we will focus on different social media platforms to analyse the varieties of English used in each particular environment, the ways users creatively harness the linguistic repertoire at their disposal, and will tackle questions related to self-presentation and discursive identity construction. |
Lernziele | The aim of the class is to introduce the students to the ways of studying English on social media. To this end, students shall be equipped with theoretical frameworks and methodological tools for tackling research questions related to digital communication. After taking part in the class, students will be able to articulate a research question related to English in social media and to independently carry out the work to answer it. |
