50521-01 - Seminar: Hollywood Cinema: From the Silent Era to the Digital Age of Filmmaking 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2018
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Sieglinde Lemke (sieglinde.lemke@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Over the last century, Hollywood has controlled the global film industry and impacted generations of viewers. Legendary heroes and heroines have served as role models shaping our understanding of love, self-confidence, beauty, and justice. Hollywood's ability to appeal to audiences worldwide relates, among other factors, to the aesthetic power of these movies.

This seminar takes a closer look at ten milestones in the history of American cinema. Students will be introduced to the art of cinematography. We will examine the specific styles that characterize the different eras: classical, new, and post-Hollywood. We will also determine the techniques, by which filmmakers arrest viewers' attention and, more generally, the politics of the visual gaze.

Films to be discussed in this course include:
- Modern Times, dir. Charly Chaplin (1936)
- Citizen Kane, dir. Orson Welles (1941)
- The Graduate, dir. Mike Nicholls (1967)
- Taxi Driver, dir. Martin Scorsese (1976)
- Thelma and Louise, dir. Ridley Scott (1991)
- American Beauty, dir. Sam Mendes (1999)
- Crash, dir. Paul Haggis (2004)
- Brokeback Mountain, dir. Ang Lee (2005)
- Avatar, dir. James Cameron (2009)
- Django Unchained, dir Quentin Tarantino, (2012)
Lernziele Students will learn to analyze movies as aesthetic objects, discuss the various genres, and contextualize the political or philosophical message these visual texts communicate. In addition to the analytic skill, this course will provide students with a conceptual framework to read films properly.
Literatur Critical and theoretical texts will be made available on ADAM.
