41238-01 - Proseminar: Introduction to Hinduism 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2018
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Simona Chaudhry-Ferraro (simona.chaudhry-ferraro@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Based on a multidisciplinary approach, embracing aesthetics, sociological and philosophical aspects, this course shall provide a wide overview to the comparative study of Hinduism as a most complex religious and cultural phenomenon.
After preliminary introduction to the historical development of the different Indic religious and philosophical traditions, the course will focus on the main tenets and core ideas of Hinduism while offering a special insight into the sociological and aesthetic dimensions in both theory and practice, from both historical and contemporary perspectives. The most popular Hindu gods and goddesses will be analysed from a mythological, iconographical and ritualistic point of view with the support of visual representations (in art and architecture) and the critical readings of different texts. In addition, the course foresees a special workshop focusing on living Hinduism in Switzerland through fieldwork. The Course structure tends to make students understand the concept of "unity within diversity" which makes most diverse religious and cultural traditions converge in that single stream or term known as Hinduism/Hindu Dharma.
Lernziele The Students will learn basic concepts, theories and Sanskrit terms that recur in most Hindu religious and philosophical traditions, enabling them to understand the textual sources and related academic literature available. The Course would also help to understand the co-relation of Hinduism with Buddhism and Jainism. The students will learn to recognise/identify the different roles and special features characterising the major gods and goddesses, different modes of worship and the significance of myths and symbols associated to their cults. ‪They will acquire a special awareness of diversity of Hinduism in South and Southeast Asia, including an overview of the contemporary Hindu traditions in different Swiss diaspora contexts.

- Some more texts will be provided during the course (including visual representations in art and architecture)
