Inhalt | Sustainable development is a difficult concept to grasp and many approaches compete with each other. Probably the most prominent approach currently discussed is the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, in which the United Nations conceptualized sustainable development as five dimensions: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership. India and China are currently pursuing economic growth by adopting a consumption-based approach, which causes many problems. Both countries are experiencing economic and social transition under the pressure of decreasing natural resources, environmental degradation, and, in the case of China, an ageing population. The current developmental strategies are unsustainable and outdated. In this proseminar, we will explore opportunities and barriers to sustainable development in India and China. Students will familiarize themselves with the concept of sustainable development more generally, the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development more specifically, and how sustainable development plays an important part in the current and future development in India and China. |
Lernziele | Students - are familiar with the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals; - understand risks, challenges, and opportunities for sustainability in India and China; - are sensitized to the local and global implications of development in India and China. |
