| Inhalt | As of 2 August 2018, enrollment for this course is closed. The early 1950s saw the publication of several novels by African-American writers that have gone on to be very influential for later African-American writers and have also received a great deal of attention from literary scholars. This course will consider four such novels, three of which were debuts (by James Baldwin, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Ralph Ellison), while the fourth was the latest novel by Ann Petry, the first African-American woman to publish a novel that sold over a million copies (with her debut from 1947). |

| Literatur | The four novels to be read in the course were all originally published in 1952 or 1953: - James Baldwin, "Go Tell It On The Mountain" - Gwendolyn Brooks, "Maud Martha" - Ralph Ellison, "Invisible Man" - Ann Petry, "The Narrows" The books will be available at the Labyrinth bookstore, Nadelberg 17, Basel. |
