Inhalt | How does King Lear address his daughters? Does he use 'you' or 'thou'? How do they address him? And what about the other characters, how do they address each other? What do the discourse markers 'marry' or 'prithee' mean in Shakespeare's plays? And what are the linguistic resources of the characters to be polite or impolite to each other? These are just some of the questions that we will explore in this seminar on the pragmatics of William Shakespeare's plays. We will read and discuss a range of relevant research papers, and we will carry out our own small-scale research projects on the pragmatics of Shakespeare. In order to give us a common basis for these case studies, all participants should have read "King Lear" and "The Merry Wives of Windsor" before the beginning of the semester. |
Lernziele | At the end of this course, students should be able to describe a range of specific pragmatic aspects (discourse markers, im/politeness, speech acts) in fictional texts; and they should be able to critically assess pragmatic research methods in view of their suitability to fictional texts and in particular to the plays written by William Shakespeare. |
