Inhalt This course in sociolinguistics examines the interactions between language and society and takes a closer look at the role of language in a variety of social contexts. Students will examine the ways in which language functions, how it influences thought and how it varies according to age, ethnicity, class and gender. Students will also explore how identity is constructed and performed and consider the creative potential of language in the media, politics and everyday talk.
Lernziele After having attended this course, students should be able to (i) understand and explain the basics of language socialization, (ii) understand and explain how language influences thought and behavior, (iii) describe and discuss how the construction and performance of identity is exercised through the relationships between language and politics, media, gender, ethnicity, age and class, (iv) describe and discuss linguistic landscapes, (v) describe and discuss global Englishes and the role of English as a lingua franca.
