Inhalt | Why are some countries rich, whilst others are poor? Why have some societies been more peaceful than others? And why are some states more democratic, whilst others are more autocratic? This seminar is dedicated to exploring diverse facets of development, ranging from economic to social to political. The course aims at providing students with an understanding of key theories of development, historical dynamics of (late) development, and some of the contemporarily prevailing policy debates. In order to achieve this objective, the seminar seeks to integrate the concepts and perspectives of a range of social science disciplines to demonstrate how their combination can further our understanding of challenges of development and change. Fundamentally, the course is geared at shedding light on the question how and under what conditions social, economic, and political change is possible, and what costs and consequences they entail. The seminar critically engages with different perspectives on development, and provides insights into dominant concepts and practices in international development. |
