19664-01 - Seminar: Evaluation of compound properties 1 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2019
Angebotsmuster Jedes Frühjahrsem.
Dozierende Matthias Hamburger (matthias.hamburger@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The seminar will address the evaluation of physico-chemical, pharmacological/toxicological and biopharmaceutical properties of drugs with a series of case studies. Case studies are typically on recent industrial drug discovery and development projects. In teams of 2 or 3, students will work on specific case studies selected and prepared by the lecturer. The groups will receive selected literature for their case study, and a catalogue of key questions to be addressed. The teams will address these questions, and discuss the specific case within the general context, and in comparison to possible industrial competitor projects.
Lernziele Participants know and understand the parameters which are important for the pharmaceutical and pharmacological/toxicological profiling of a compound. They are able to evaluate the suitability of a molecule as drug substance, and to delineate options for structural modifications of a compound in view of an optimization of its properties as a drug. They are able to evaluate the outcomes of a specific drug development program against the background of current knowledge. Students are able to summarize their findings in a concise written and oral form.
Literatur Key literature on each case study, and a catalogue of questions to be addressed, will be prepared and handed out by the lecturer. As general reference, the following book can be consulted: Molecular Drug Properties. Measurement and Prediction. R. Mannhold, H. Kubinyi, G. Folkers, Wiley-VCH 2007
Bemerkungen In case that all participants are native German speakers, the seminar may be held in German. Otherwise it will be in English. The written report, and oral presentation will be in English.
Film and sound recordings during the course are strictly forbidden (recorders may be confiscated
