| Inhalt | How does the scale of historical analysis affect our view of the past? What can small case studies tell us about larger historical developments? Do we need long-term perspectives in order to understand historical change and for history to remain relevant to the present? These questions have long been a matter of fierce debate among historians because they cut to the very core of our discipline, namely to the question of how history should (not) be written. In light of the recent trend towards global history and big data, these debates have come to the fore once again, resulting in both passionate calls for a return to longue durée history and attempts to combine global and microhistorical perspectives. In this course, we will trace these debates through a series of works that deal with matters of scale in theory and practice, ranging from Ginzburg’s microhistorical classic "The Cheese and the Worms" to Guldi and Armitage’s "History Manifesto". In doing so, we will learn about and discuss a variety of analytic methods and different ways of writing history, and think about how we might use them in our own work. The course will be taught in English and is especially suited for students with an interest in methodology, historical narration, and/or the early modern period. |
