| Inhalt | The seminar surveys the economic history of the Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth century. In the “longest century” of the empire, the Ottoman Empire underwent major socioeconomic developments that transformed the greater region and the people. Until recently, the broader Middle East has mostly been examined from the economic perspectives of modernisation, incorporation, and underdevelopment. In this course, however, we will question the “economic decline” of the empire. Rather than the decline, we will focus on various aspects of the Ottoman economy and its transformation, and their impact in the long run. Examining the nineteenth century Ottoman economy from a thematic perspective, this seminar furnishes a historical grounding for the basic concepts and problems of the Ottoman economic history. The themes include, among others, provincial notables; war and military finances; trade and merchant networks; industrialisation and urban labour; transformation of land and property; migration and tribal economies; agrarian question; economic violence and confiscation of non-Muslim subjects’ property. |
| Lernziele | By taking the course, the students will: • acquire a basic knowledge and conceptualisation about the basic Ottoman economic institutions and their transformation; • develop a critical approach and conceptualisation in evaluating the transformation of the Middle Eastern economies in a broader context; • discover how socioeconomic developments paved the way for the current situation in Turkey in particular, and the Middle East in general. |
