53966-01 - Forschungsseminar: Quantitative approaches to idiomatic expressions in English 4 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2019
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Steven Elijah Duman (steve.duman@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt There is an incredibly large and continually-growing amount of language data available online. As a consequence, it is increasingly important for linguists, social scientists, and researchers in the Humanities to have a command of tools with which they can gather, organize, and analyze the data. One powerful - and free - tool is the software environment R.

This class serves as a hands-on, introductory class to analyzing language data with R, as employed through the RStudio interface. In particular, we will use two packages to help gather and analyze data: Tidyverse and Quanteda. Because these packages allow you to do a great deal without 'coding from scratch', no prior programming experience is required.

The class will also address the multiple problems and complexities that arise in using online language data. We will examine everything from the analysis of mult-word constructions (i.e., idioms) to the incorporation of nonlinguistic variables in your analyses.
Lernziele In this class, you will learn how to use R to:

(1) Acquire language data from online sources, including ‘scraping’
(2) Organize the data
(3) Create data summaries
(4) Make data visualizations
(5) Run basic statistical tests
(6) Write up the results

Teilnahmebedingungen For MA students
Anmeldung zur Lehrveranstaltung In order to ensure a good learning environment, we aim at no more than 20 students per class (2 sections). We ask you to register via the following doodle link and recommend that you create a doodle account https://doodle.com/poll/d8wrttm2dfhyvgmm. You may only register TWICE: once for a class section and once for a waiting list.

Multiple voting (more than twice) will be removed and you will be assigned a place in a class with free seats after registration has closed. Should you not have made it into one of the courses and you are only able to register for the waiting lists, we guarantee that we will take you in the course with the least student numbers. The doodle will close on February 11 in order to finalise student distribution in the week before term start.
