| Inhalt | This course will explore debates in the historiography of Africa concerning its integration into (and disintegration from) global markets through the themes of cotton, cloths and clothing. Students will learn about the importance of Africa to the imperial cotton production agenda. What were the survival tactics of indigenous producers? Then, we will confront the “colonial gaze” through a discussion of naked versus being clothed during the colonial period and leading into the era of independence. For the postcolonial period, we will take into account Africa's place between Europe and America’s second-hand donations and products made in China. Lastly, African designers will have their say on local fashions today. |
