55011-01 - Seminar: Anthropology of Infrastructures 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2019
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Silke Oldenburg (silke.oldenburg@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Meandering roads connect the rural hinterlands of rapidly urbanizing spaces to the sprawling megacities of the Global South. Large hydropower dams regulate the flow of rivers in remote landscapes and energy is delivered to ever-more demanding markets and populations.
In many places of the Global South, local communities see themselves confronted with major infrastructural projects that promise economic development, progress and modernity. Commonly conceptualized as material networks that enable movement and connectivity through time and space, infrastructures are also part of wider ideological projects and thus central to the organization and exercise of state power. Besides spurring growth in economically disadvantaged regions, infrastructural development may also generate new opportunities for exploitation, contribute to environmental damage, or result in forced displacement of populations.
This seminar will be reading-intensive. We will explore how local populations deal with roads, water systems and fiber-optic cables and zoom into the questions how people alter, resist or negotiate infrastructures (and also their breakdown) in their everyday lives and how roads, water pipes and wires are linked to citizens’ perceptions of state governance?
