Inhalt The current technical, political and cultural environment imposes a critical rethinking of maps and the introduction of new forms of cartographic representation able to capture how spaces are produced, transformed and inhabited. Mapmakers are challenged to represent an unstable and globalized world in which visual images have an unprecedented communicative significance.

By questioning maps’ scientific neutrality and interrogating the decision-making process that determines their final appearance, this course explores the epistemological and interpretative challenge that reading and producing maps poses. It equips students with “cartographic literacy:” the capacity to understand the power, complexity, and ambiguity of maps.

Far from being the objective reproduction of the earth surface, mapping is a creative moment of knowledge production that brings together the act of observing, conceptualizing and describing. Graphically conveying spatial information calls for a series of decisions concerning the scale of representation, the framing of an area, the selection of existing or imagined features and the coding of this information. This practice activates a deeper, analytical, and subjective way of looking at things and provides a more profound understanding of spaces and of the everyday urban activities that take place within and redefine them.

During an introductory section, students will be introduced to the theoretical background necessary to critically read maps, plans, and masterplans. In the following weeks, the course will be organized around a series of assignments to develop in class and across the city in order to gain practical mapping skills in the urban context. Students will be asked to creatively develop strategies to represent processes, flows, activities, and ephemeral uses of space.

Tutorial on the most common graphics software (InDesign – Illustrator) will be provided in the second part of the semester in order to digitize initially hand-drawn maps and communicate, with growing precision, individual interpretations of complex urban phenomena.

Students’ work will be collectively reviewed and discussed in class on a weekly base.
Lernziele This course has two main objectives. First students will acquire a “cartographic literacy”, which will allow them to critically read existing maps. Secondly, through the production of maps, they will develop new ways of experiencing, observing and inquiring the urban realm. In particular, students will learn to understand and represent how urban everyday activities shape and are shaped by spaces.
No skill in hand drawing or specific graphics software is required,
