55175-01 - Seminar: Nationalist Thought in the Eastern Mediterranean in the Early Twentieth Century 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2019
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Ali Sonay (ali.sonay@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This seminar explore a key political ideology in the Middle East, crucial to the understanding of the region until today. The early twentieth century was a formative period for political ideologies in general and nationalism in particular. The Eastern Mediterranean was at a stage of political and socioeconomic reconfiguration with the Ottoman Empire increasingly losing territory and legitimacy. The Empire`s multi-ethnic and multi-confessional populations` concomitant growing contact with European education and political thought enabled the formulation of new identities. The result was the emergence of Greek, Armenian, Arab, and Turkish nationalisms among others.
Focusing on Turkish and Arab nationalism the seminar is divided in two thematic parts. The first part will explore theories of nationalism and its emergence in the Middle East, particularly in the Turkish and Arab contexts. The second part will be dedicated to the reading and discussion of primary sources of influential Turkish nationalist thinkers such as Yusuf Akçura and Zita Gökalp.
Lernziele Students will:

- become familiar with theories of nationalism.
- learn to contextualize theory with the emergence of nationalist thought in the Middle East, specifically Turkish and Arab nationalism.
- train the reading and interpretation of primary sources.
Literatur The literature will be announced at the start of the seminar and be made available on ADAM.
