| Inhalt | The seminar engages an important concept in development policy and, by implication, Africa. Probably no concept in recent years has played such an important role not only in framing the perception of Africa, but also in accounting for the present condition of the continent. This makes it absolutely important to train students to critically engage with the role concepts play in shaping perceptions. Students will be encouraged to articulate ideas from the philosophy of language (Paul Grice, John Searle and John Austin) with critical debates both in the field of political sociology and development studies. They will also be invited to explore the distinction between basic and applied research and how it bears on our perceptions of reality. Since the goal is to equip students to engage with how policy issues shape our perception of reality the seminar will also discuss key issues in the study of corruption and how knowledge thereof shapes development policy. |
