| Inhalt | Spatial orientation is one of the core cognitive functions in humans. Yet typological research has demonstrated that languages differ widely in how they encode deixis as well as topological, relational, and absolute spatial configurations. Similar cross-linguistic variation is attested for the encoding of reference to time. In addition, there is a debate of whether temporal reference is derived from spatial reference. In this lecture I will first discuss the linguistic means to encode spatial and temporal reference (division of labour between lexicon and grammar), and then introduce the typological options for encoding spatial and temporal relations. In a second step, different approaches regarding the cognitive-conceptual underpinnings of spatial and temporal reference will be discussed (processing, acquisition). |
