55197-01 - Seminar: Academic Proficiency Among Trilingual Immigrant Students 2 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2019
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Orly Haim (orly.haim@unibas.ch)
Inhalt The presence of multilingual immigrant youth is an expanding phenomenon in many educational settings due to globalization and migration. Bi/multilingual immigrant youth often face educational difficulties, closely intertwined with language deficiencies, psychological and sociocultural adjustment to the host society. The urgent need to learn the medium of instruction at school in order to function academically and socially, absorb information about the new environment, in many cases combined with experience of loss and dislocation may bear on their psychological well-being and school adjustment. Given the global spread of English and the status it has gained as an international language, in many non-English speaking countries (e.g., many European countries), immigrant students are required to learn at least two additional languages within a relatively short time: the hegemonic school language and English taught as an additional language.
This seminar focuses on language maintenance and the acquisition of additional languages among immigrant students in various educational settings. Theories and research related to language, identity, immigration and society will be addressed, with particular emphasis on immigrant students’ school adjustment, acculturation and socialization processes. We will discuss difficulties experienced by immigrant students in the destination country as well as the factors (e.g., linguistic, cognitive, social, familial, educational) explaining academic success.
Lernziele Course Objectives:
1) To discuss aspects of language acquisition, language maintenance, and bi/ multilingualism among immigrant students
2) To examine various aspects of language, identity, migration and society and the interface points among them in various educational contexts
3) To encourage critical thinking by examining theories, research, acculturation, and language policy issues in immigration contexts
4) To discuss and examine approaches to teaching, learning and assessing immigrant students, including language learning materials
5) To write a position paper (i.e., text contribution, critique) relevant to the issues discussed in the course.
