| Inhalt | In this course, I would like to critically analyse the multiple conceptual legacies of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. My interest would be to locate the spaces that have been influenced by the practices, institutions, ideas, and systems that are directly or indirectly linked to the event that has given birth to an African diaspora in the Americas. I would like to explore the extent to which these legacies participate in shaping today’s world – as a background to a set of power relations at play in everyday life, especially around the question of race and labour. This class is an opportunity to take stock of the historiography of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, putting a special emphasis on accounts from former salves on the one hand, and on understanding the connected histories of slavery and the Industrial Revolution in Western Europe (among others, Switzerland) on the other hand. |
| Lernziele | Understand the connections between contemporary structural racism and the practices developed during the Transatlantic Slave Trade Understand the ways in which the ways in which labour practices, laws and struggles draw from practices inherited from the Transatlantic Slave Trade Critically analyse the connections and power dynamics at play in the contemporary international order in foregrounding the centrality of the “discovery” of the Americas in the shaping of our world |

| Teilnahmebedingungen | Für Studierende des BSF Geschichte im Grundstudium mit abgeschlossenem Einführungskurs Geschichte. Teilnahme an der ersten Sitzung ist obligatorisch. Die Teilnehmerzahl ist auf 25 beschränkt. Bei Überbelegung werden Studierende des BSF Geschichte, die noch kein Proseminar in dem Modul absolviert haben, bevorzugt zugelassen. |
