Dozierende Lucy Koechlin (lucy.koechlin@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Anthropology has long struggled with adequately capturing and conceptualising violence. This blind spot has been addressed in the last few decades, seeking to understand social and societal violence in more systemic ways. Influential contributions include Pierre Bourdieu's notion of "symbolic violence", i.e. invisible forms of violence that are underscored by dominant values, practices and structures. In the wake of the violent regional and national reconfigurations of the post-Cold War, anthropologists have turned their attention to developing concepts and methodologies to capture the meanings and interpretations of people engaged in and affected by violence. In addition, a growing body of work questions the role of anthropologists themselves as "silent witnesses" of violence, observing but not engaging.
In this seminar, we will cut through conceptual distinctions and explore anthropologies of violence through a series of ethnographic texts. These are loosely chronological; the ethnographic material and the anthropological sense made of it are irritating and illuminating at the same time.
