| Inhalt | The invention of a collective memory, traditions and a shared historical past (either “real” or “imagined”) is aimed at grounding the individual more firmly to his or her territory (“homeland”), political community (“nation”) and the incumbent regime. According to Yael Zerubavel, national myths preach and promote the notion of self-sacrifice for the greater good of the state. In return, the state assures the remembrance of personal sacrifice by public commemoration that transform the private person to a national symbol. This class will discuss the relations between nationalism, collective memory and nation building in the contemporary Middle East by examining foundation myths, commemoration practices, memorial days, archeology, monuments, cemeteries and state cults in various Middle Eastern countries, focusing on Israel, Turkey, Iraq and Lebanon. |
| Lernziele | Students will: - become acquainted with the theoretical background on nationalism and its relations to collective memory, nation building and commemoration. - become acquainted with the analytical tools to examine commemoration practices in their own work. - implicitly develop their professional use of English in an academic setting through oral participation and written exercises. |
