| Inhalt | In this lecture, we will explore the language from the Early Modern period (roughly 1500 - 1700) in its historical context. After a general introduction to the topic, we will be concerned with the linguistic characteristics of Early Modern English. We will look at the the Early Modern English lexicon and we will see how historical events influenced the vocabulary. We will study the syntax of Early Modern English in its relation to both Middle English and Present-day English, and we will look at the spelling of Early Modern English and its relation to pronunciation. The second part of the lecture is devoted to selected Early Modern English genres. We will look at the linguistic characteristics of early mass communication at the beginning of printing culture, at scientific writing in medical texts, and at the linguistic conventions of early modern personal correspondence. Throughout the lecture, we will focus on how historical events and the culture of Early Modern England influenced the language of the period, and we will discuss the resources and methods that linguists today can use to study the language of past times. |
| Lernziele | At the end of the course: - Students will be able to describe the main linguistic characteristics of Early Modern English (lexicon, syntax, spelling) - Students can name and describe the different methods and types of sources of information about Early Modern English that are available to researchers - Students will be able to describe selected Early Modern English genres in their historical context |
