57150-01 - Seminar: Anglophone Representations of Italian Otherness: from E.M. Forster to Sarah Hall 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2020
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Francesca Pierini (francesca.pierini@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This seminar explores the literary construction and representation of Italian otherness in Anglophone literary fiction from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day. It sets itself the goal of challenging and problematizing the politics of identity centered on a North-South divide that shapes the collective imaginary of our time.
Students will engage in a discursive analysis of significant instances of canonized modern and contemporary Anglophone texts - by E.M. Forster, Daphne du Maurier, Ian McEwan, Sarah Hall - in order to understand the process by which cultures are taxonomically perceived and organized within a global context.
Lernziele By the end of the seminar, students will have become familiar with a dominant descriptive pattern of the Anglo-Italian encounter which has been focusing on representing Italy as a unique constellation of counter-values to British culture and its ethos.
