| Inhalt | In this course, we will discuss the pragmatic approach to persuasion and argumentation. We will review the speech act framework and the Cooperative Principle, and then apply these classic concepts to persuasive language in its many guises: advertising, self-promotion, propaganda, seduction, argumentative writing. Students will be given a chance to participate in the ongoing research project on persuasive language through in-class discussions, annotation sessions, and self-researched contributions. |
| Lernziele | At the end of this course, students will have a good grasp of the pragmatic and discourse analytic approaches to persuasive genres, and know how to design a research project involving language data around these research topics. |
